My Experience on the Iceland Trail
For years, Iceland had been at the top of my bucket list. The land of fire and ice, known for its rugged nature, steaming hot springs, and overwhelming landscapes. Last summer, the time had finally come: I laced up my hiking boots for The Iceland Trail. It turned out to be an experience I will never forget.
The Start of the Adventure
The journey begins in Reykjavik, where the group gathers. There is an immediate sense of excitement in the air. Everyone is ready for the legendary Laugavegur Trail, a route often cited as one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. After a briefing and a final check of our gear, we set off toward Landmannalaugar, the starting point of our trek.
Landmannalaugar: A Painted Landscape
When we arrived in Landmannalaugar, I felt like I had stepped onto another planet. The rhyolite mountains are colored in shades of yellow, red, and orange, contrasting sharply with the black lava fields and the bright green moss. The first day of hiking immediately took us past steaming sulfur springs. The smell of rotten eggs (typical for geothermal areas) was something we had to get used to, but the view made up for everything.
Challenging Elements
Hiking in Iceland is not just about enjoying the view; it’s also a battle against the elements. We experienced everything: from bright sunshine to horizontal rain and biting winds. Crossing ice-cold rivers was perhaps the most challenging part. Taking off your boots, putting on water shoes, and wading through the waist-deep glacial water—it’s freezing, but the adrenaline kick you get once you reach the other side is indescribable.
My highlight
For me, the second day of hiking really stood out. The variety of views that day was truly unprecedented and immediately made it clear just how special Iceland is. Every hour, the landscape seemed to change completely, keeping you constantly watching and in a state of wonder.
The moment we approached Álftavatn is one I will always remember. The lake, the vast open plains, and the sense of peace that hangs there… and in the evening, the sun slowly setting while we pitched our tents—that image is still burned into my mind.
What also makes this trail extra special are the river crossings. It might sound intense, but it actually makes it more fun. It provides a great change of pace and gives the trail an extra adventurous edge.
Why You Should Do This Too
The Iceland Trail is more than just a hike. It is a physical and mental challenge that rewards you with views you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you are an experienced hiker or just looking for a unique adventure, this trail offers a perfect balance of exertion and relaxation in nature.
What stayed with me the most…
When I look back on this experience, it is mainly the overall experience that sticks with me. The landscapes are unique, rugged, and almost otherworldly. The feeling of freedom, of being completely away from everything. But it’s primarily the unexpected moments that make the difference. For instance, on our last night, we were suddenly woken up by the guides. In the distance, we saw an orange glow: a volcanic eruption near Reykjavik. The next day, I even had the chance to go and see it from a closer perspective. A moment like that is something you never forget. It is precisely those experiences that make this trail so special. The Iceland Trail isn’t just a regular trip; it’s an adventure that pulls you completely out of your daily life and continues to resonate for a long time to come
My tips for future hikers:
- Invest in good gear: Waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots are a must.
-
Train beforehand: The days are long and the terrain is uneven.
-
Enjoy every moment: Even when it rains, the landscape remains magical.
Iceland has stolen my heart, and I am certain this wasn’t my last time in the highlands. Are you ready for the adventure?
