FAQ

General

Where is the basecamp located?

Our basecamp is the central meeting point at the start and end of your trip. On day 1, the airport shuttle takes you straight there, where you’ll receive your trip briefing. You’ll also set off from here for the trail and return here after your hike, ready for your transfer back to the airport. You can optionally book your first and/or last night here.

Your basecamp depends on the trip you book:

  • Lava Hostel:

    • For campers departing on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday.
  • Dalur Hostel / Eco Campsite:

    • For all participants departing on Friday

    • For all guided hut-to-hut hikes

What camping gear do I need?

You can bring your own camping gear or rent it from us. You can rent all your camping gear from us or choose individual items, such as a tent, sleeping bag or sleeping mat.

If you bring your own gear, make sure it’s good quality and suitable for the conditions: a 3-season tent, a compact sleeping mat (with an R-value of at least 3) and a sleeping bag (with a comfort rating of at least 2°C). You’ll receive a packing list with everything you need well in advance.

What does luggage transport involve?

Baggage transport means that both your personal belongings and camping gear are driven from one shelter to the next in a 4x4. Once you arrive, you'll receive a protective 90L duffel bag for this purpose, and everything must fit inside. Your luggage may weigh no more than 20 kg. This includes camping gear, which usually weighs around 5 kg (tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag), plus food packs (around 4 kg).

However, the number of backpacks we can take is limited, so book yours soon. You'll still need your own backpack or duffel bag to travel to Iceland. We can't store suitcases, and they're not allowed. You must also bring a daypack for hiking, which you can use to carry drinks, food and rain gear.

Is luggage transport recommended?

With luggage transport, you can enjoy comfortable hikes during the day with just a light backpack (30 to 35 litres). On average, 75% of travellers opt for luggage transport. It’s definitely recommended if you’re not used to hiking with a fully loaded pack.

Looking for an extra challenge? You can also choose to carry all your belongings and camping gear in your large backpack. Make sure you include some loaded-pack hikes in your training.

What’s included in the foodpack?

We highly recommend the foodpack. It provides all the nutrients you need during a hike, with a tasty variety of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We use Real Turmat food packs. Visit their website to get an idea of what they include.

Your camping stove is included too, along with a cooking pot, gas burner and gas canister. Both a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian option are available.

Our food pack doesn't include snacks, coffee or tea.

What bathroom facilities are available on the trail?

The campsites where we stay always have toilets. Four of the five campsites also have a shower. However, there are no bathroom facilities along the hiking routes themselves. So if nature calls, you'll have to answer it the adventurous way.

We follow a Leave No Trace policy, which means keeping the landscape as untouched as possible. That's why we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper and other waste.

Is there phone reception during the trail?

During the trail, you’ll have little to no signal. Let people back home know so they don’t worry. You’ll usually have signal somewhere every other day, and your SIM card also works in Iceland, with the same rates as at home.

What about food and drinks?

There are no restaurants or supermarkets along the hike, so you’ll need to bring enough food for the entire route. You can buy a food pack with a cooking set (pot, gas burner and gas canister) from us for €115 (vegetarian) / €119 (meat). It includes three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). We use Real Turmat food packs. Visit their website to get an idea of what they contain.

You’ll also need to bring your own water bottles. Make sure you can carry at least 2 litres of water. You can refill your bottles at the shelters along the way. And don’t forget to bring enough snacks for each day!

Álftavatn has a small restaurant where you can order a meal on site, although the selection is limited. Husadalur has a slightly larger restaurant where you can order a tasty burger.

Where do we sleep on the trail?

During the trail, you’ll stay in unique places to sleep along the Laugavegur Trail.

Camping: You’ll spend a week in your own tent near the shelters. Bring your own camping gear or rent it from us.

Mountain huts: You’ll sleep in a bed in a shared dormitory, sheltered from the elements.

Most places have all the sanitary facilities you need. Showers are also available at most campsites and huts for a small fee, payable easily by card.

Is there on-site support?

On-site support depends on which type of Iceland Trail you book with us.

Guided trips

  • English speaking guides on the trail to help if you run into difficulties
  • Daily briefings and instructions, including extra tips and tricks
  • Walk at your own pace, as long as you stay between the first and last guide
  • Guides spread out across the group. The guides at the back are there to support hikers who run into problems. If you feel more comfortable walking alongside a guide, you can of course follow the guide's route at all times.
  • For safety reasons, the guides may decide to keep the group together.

Self-guided trips

  • Walk completely independently during the day, without guides on the trail
  • Everything is arranged for you in advance: transport, accommodation, optional extras...
  • A ranger is present at the campsites every day to help if needed
  • We expect you to have experience with multi-day hikes and be able to navigate independently using the trail app and offline maps

Guided hut-to-hut treks

  • One English speaking guide accompanies you on the trail to help if you run into difficulties
  • Daily briefings and instructions, including extra tips and tricks
  • You will be accompanied by one guide in a small group. We give you as much freedom as possible to walk at your own pace.
  • For safety reasons, the guide may decide to keep the group together.

Just before departure, you'll also get access to a chat with all participants departing on the same date. You can use the group to communicate with one another or with our team.

Can you take food allergies or intolerances into account?

Since we offer freeze-dried meals (food packs), we recommend bringing your own food. As all freeze-dried meals are processed in the same facility, cross-contamination with allergens cannot be ruled out.

What are the gear specifications and dimensions?

The camping gear you can rent from us weighs approximately 4.7 kg for one person and 7.2 kg for two people in total. It’s easy to split between both backpacks. The details below may vary slightly:

  • One-person tent: spacious two-person tent weighing 2.7 kg (packed size: 51 x 17 cm).
  • Two-person tent: three-person tent weighing 3.19 kg (packed size: 51 x 20 cm).
  • Lightweight self-inflating sleeping mat weighing 470 grams (packed size: 13 x 26 cm).
  • Comfortable sleeping bag weighing 1.9 kg (packed size: 38 x 25 cm). Comfort temperature: 0°C.
  • Adjustable trekking poles up to a maximum length of 135 cm. To check whether the poles will fit you, measure the distance from the ground to your elbow while holding your arm at a 90-degree angle. If the distance is 135 cm or less, the poles are suitable.

Communication

When will I receive more information about my trip?

As your trip approaches, you’ll receive all the practical information at the following times:

  • Shortly after booking: you’ll receive a training plan and packing list, and get access to the Travelbase app.
  • At least 1 month before departure: you’ll find all the travel information in the Travelbase app.
  • At least 2 weeks before departure: you’ll receive the final practical details and get access to the group chat, where you can meet your fellow travelers, guides, or rangers.
How can my family get in touch with me during the trail?

Your family can contact the general Travelbase office line to pass on urgent messages. Our office staff can then alert the guides or rangers via satellite phone.

About The Iceland Trail

Can I leave the trail or skip a day?

It’s not possible to simply leave the trail or skip a day of hiking. From Landmannalaugar, the starting point, you can still take a Highland bus back to Reykjavik, but you’ll need to cover the cost yourself. The campsites at Álftavatn and Emstrur are very remote, so getting back from either one is difficult and expensive. On the final hiking day to Husadalur, you can choose a shorter route and walk straight to the last base camp.

How many kilometers will I cover?

Over the course of the week, you’ll hike around 80 km. The stages range from 12 to 16 km, with a longer day on day 3 (24 km). The days are well planned and balanced, creating a good mix of distance covered and elevation gained. If you’re interested, the guides offer short evening hikes on some days.

What can I expect from the guided trails?

Every day, the guides give briefings and instructions on the best way to tackle that day’s hike. In principle, you’re free to hike independently during the day. The guides will spread out across the group. The guides at the back are there to support hikers who run into trouble. If you feel more comfortable having a guide by your side, you can of course always follow one of the guides. There are always English speaking guides with the group.

For safety reasons, the guides may decide to keep the group together.

What can I expect on the guided hut-to-hut hike?

In a small group of no more than 10 participants, you'll be accompanied by one English speaking guide. We give you as much freedom as possible to hike at your own pace. For safety reasons, however, the guide may decide to keep the group together. After a day of hiking, you'll sleep in a sheltered shared dormitory.

Who are the self-guided trails for?

You’ll hike independently during the day, so we expect you to have experience with multi-day treks and be able to navigate independently using the trail app and offline maps. For self-guided departures, we recommend booking as a pair or in a small group.

You can optionally add overnight stays in the huts for €600 per person (Friday departures only).

Use the questions below to quickly check whether self-guided is right for you:

  • Do you have experience with multi-day hikes?
  • Can you navigate independently using an app and offline map?
  • Can you set and adjust your own pace, breaks and daily schedule based on the weather conditions?
  • Can you provide basic first aid and fix minor equipment problems yourself?
  • Are you self-reliant and able to make your own decisions in the event of an injury or emergency? (We’ll provide you with clear guidelines in the trail app!)

Did you answer yes to all the questions? Then a self-guided departure is right for you! Still have some doubts? Feel free to email us at info@theicelandtrail.com.

How are the hikes organized?

Before your trip starts, you’ll get access to the Travelbase app, which contains detailed information about all the routes, highlights and practical details.

Guided trails

  • Experienced English speaking guides will be there to help you whenever you need them. They also carry a GPS tracker with an emergency signal, so they can raise the alarm if necessary. You’ll also get a briefing every morning and evening with extra tips and tricks.
  • Guided hut-to-hut treks are accompanied by one guide and are limited to small groups of up to 10 people.

Self-guided trails

  • This means you’ll be walking completely independently during the day. We’ll make sure you have everything you need to make your hike a success. The trail app includes clear day-by-day descriptions, navigation and tips to help you prepare for different situations. A ranger is available at every campsite in the evening to answer questions, provide spare equipment and offer support, but you’re responsible for yourself on the trail during the day.
Who is this trip suitable for?

Anyone aged 16 to 65, in good physical shape and up for an adventure can take on this trail. The trip involves a solid amount of physical activity, so good health is essential. Keep in mind that the weather can be changeable.

Children aren’t allowed. Still want to go hiking with your family? Hike Tribe is a better alternative.

Important for self-guided trips

Our self-guided trails are only suitable for hikers with experience in multi-day treks.

Want to try a multi-day trek for the first time, but unsure about your fitness level?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What types of physical activity do I do regularly, and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that affect my ability to hike?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 kilometres over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train specifically over the coming months to prepare properly?

If your answers give you every confidence to head off on an adventure, this trail is definitely for you! A week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to help you prepare and complete the trail comfortably.

Still unsure and would like to test yourself before setting off on the trail?

Try one of our micro-adventures, such as The Packraft Trail.

Prices & Booking Conditions

I can no longer join the trip. Can someone else use my plane ticket?

Flight tickets are issued in the passenger’s name and generally cannot be transferred to someone else. Name changes or corrections depend on the airline and the ticket’s terms and conditions.

If someone else needs to travel in your place, please contact us as soon as possible. We’ll then check what options are available.

Can I cancel my flight and get a refund if I decide not to travel?

Flights booked through Travelbase are generally non-refundable. This means that if you decide not to travel, your flight costs will generally not be refunded.

Can't travel? Please contact us as soon as possible. You can't cancel your flight or remove it from your booking yourself. We'll check the applicable conditions and let you know what options are available.

What are the additional costs?

The essentials are already included in the base price, but while booking you can optionally add the following extras:

  • Equipment: rental of quality camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat) and trekking poles.
  • Meals: convenient food packs for the trail.
  • Comfort & Extras: options such as luggage transport or extra nights before or after the trail.
  • Insurance: travel insurance.

You'll find a detailed overview of the price for each option under the practical information section.

What is the payment procedure?

Immediately after booking, you’ll need to pay a deposit to confirm your trip. You’ll then have until the check-in date to change your options and pay the remaining balance. If you add any options after the check-in date, they must be paid for immediately.

There are several payment options, including Bancontact, Mastercard and iDeal. If you have a Travelbase voucher, you can use that too.

Did your payment fail? There was probably an error when entering the reference number, or you may have exceeded your account limit.

Can I modify my registration?

Depending on availability, you can still add or remove most options up to a few weeks before departure. In general, we work on a first come, first served basis, so those who decide quickly have the best chance.µ

Please note that some options can no longer be cancelled, such as flights and booking conditions.

Can I still cancel my trip?

You can always cancel your trip. You can find the booking terms and conditions here. You can also rely on the Superflex cancellation policy, temporarily free for early bookers.

What are the booking conditions?

When booking, you choose how much flexibility you want. Check the different booking terms and the associated payment, amendment and cancellation conditions.

What is included in the price?

The base price includes a detailed route and complete logistical planning, 5 nights' accommodation, transport to and from the trail, a training plan and packing list, access to an exclusive app, support from our rangers or guides before and during your trip, and goodies. Flights, meals and equipment rental are optional.

Transport

Give back to nature via Greentripper

Our planet gives us so many incredible places to explore, but if we want future generations to enjoy them too, we need to protect it today. That’s why we’re taking extra steps to reduce the impact of our trips. In the booking form, you can also make a reliable contribution to a climate project by Greentripper, which balances out the CO2 emissions from your transport.

By contributing to their certified project in Uganda, you help distribute more efficient cooking stoves that significantly reduce fuel consumption. This initiative, made up of 11 local projects, protects vulnerable forests from deforestation, improves families’ health through better indoor air quality and supports the local economy by creating jobs. The project is Gold Standard-certified, meeting the highest international standards for environmental integrity.

If you choose to contribute towards the emissions from your transport, Travelbase will make an additional contribution to offset emissions generated locally. After your trip, you’ll receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Flight Info & tickets

When will I receive my flight ticket, and what if I still haven't received it?

You’ll receive your flight ticket, including your booking code (PNR) and ticket number, by email no later than 15 days before departure. Your flight ticket is also available in MyTravelbase.

Did you book your flight within 15 days of departure? Please allow up to 2 days for your flight tickets to be processed.

Is your ticket not available in MyTravelbase within these time frames, or haven’t you received it by email? Please contact us.

Where can I find the flight schedule?

The flight itinerary can be found on our website, in the booking form during the booking process, and in MyTravelbase after booking.

Why do the flight times differ between the airline and Travelbase?

We do everything we can to keep the flight information in MyTravelbase as up to date as possible. However, an airline may process a change on its own website or app before it appears in MyTravelbase.

Once you receive your flight tickets, we recommend keeping an eye on the airline’s website or app for any updates to your flight.

If there is a discrepancy, the airline’s information is therefore always the most up to date.

Where can I find my flightreservation code?

Your reservation code (also known as your booking reference or PNR) is the code you may need to check in online or manage your booking with the airline.

You’ll find this code on your flight ticket, which you’ll receive by email no later than 15 days before departure.

Your flight ticket is also available in MyTravelbase.

When do I need to be at the airport?

We recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before European flights and 4 hours before intercontinental flights.

These are general guidelines. Always check the latest information from your airline and airport before departure, as recommended arrival times may vary. Also allow enough time for your journey to the airport and for possible crowds or queues.

Please note: It is your responsibility to arrive at the airport on time. If you miss your flight because you are late, the airline is not obliged to offer a refund or an alternative flight.

How and when can I check in for my flight?

You can check in online for 24 hours before departure with Icelandair via Icelandair - Manage booking. You’ll need your booking reference and/or ticket number and last name.*

*If online check-in isn’t available because you’re travelling as part of a group booking, you can check in at the airport. Simply show your flight ticket and a valid passport or valid ID card.

Checking in online saves time at the airport and means you can receive your boarding pass in advance. Depending on the airline, you may also be able to view or choose your seat during check-in.

Make sure you arrive on time and have all the necessary information with you, including your flight ticket and valid ID.

Why can’t I check in online?

If you can't check in online, there could be several reasons:

  • Check-in hasn't opened yet: Most airlines let you check in online 24 to 48 hours before departure, depending on the airline. Check that you're trying to check in within this time frame.
  • Incorrect booking details: Even a small error can prevent online check-in. Make sure you've entered your booking reference, first name and last name correctly.
  • Special characters in your name: Make sure you've entered your name correctly. Use your full official name, but leave out accents, punctuation marks and special characters (such as é, ü, ñ, ç or a full stop in an abbreviation like T.). Airline systems don't always process these characters correctly, which can cause check-in to fail.
  • Group booking restrictions: Some airlines don't allow online check-in for group bookings. In that case, you'll need to check in at the airport.

Still can't check in online, or aren't sure what's causing the problem? Then contact us. We're happy to help.

When will I receive my boarding pass?

You can get your boarding pass from the airline by checking in.

  • Online check-in usually opens 24 hours before departure, if this option is available.
  • Otherwise, you can check in at the airport, usually from around 3 hours before departure.

To check in, you’ll need your booking code (booking reference or PNR) and/or your 13-digit ticket number. You’ll find these details on your flight ticket.

My name or date of birth is incorrect on my flightticket. What should I do?

Your name and date of birth on the flightticket must match the details on your ID card or passport.

If you notice an error, please get in touch as soon as possible. We’ll check whether it needs to be corrected and, if necessary, request the change from the airline. Please note that fees may apply, depending on the airline.

My name appears on the ticket without accents or spaces

It’s normal for names on flight tickets to be shown without accents or spaces. Most airline booking systems don’t recognize special characters or spaces, so names are often displayed as one continuous string of letters.

As long as your name is spelled correctly and matches the name on your passport, missing accents or spaces aren’t a problem, and your ticket remains valid.

Flight options & extras

Can I change my flight dates?

No, Travelbase does not offer changes to the flights included in the package. The flights we offer are aligned with the trip's official start and end dates, so your arrival and departure dates match the itinerary.

Would you like to arrive earlier, stay longer or travel on different dates? You can arrange your own flights or transport separately.

Which flight class is included, and can I upgrade?

The flights included in your trip are standard Economy Class flights.

Would you prefer to travel in a higher class? Once you’ve received your flight tickets, you can check directly with the airline whether an upgrade is available. Upgrades must be arranged directly with the airline and are at your own expense.

The availability and price of an upgrade are determined by the airline and may vary.

Can I choose my seat, and will we be seated next to each other?

Where possible, we try to seat travel companions next to each other, but we cannot guarantee this. The airline may change the seating arrangement for operational reasons.

Would you like to choose a specific seat yourself? Once you have received your flight tickets, you can usually check the available seats on the airline's website. Choosing a seat may involve an additional fee.

What luggage is included, and can I add extra luggage?

No, checked baggage is not included with the Icelandair flights we offer.

Your ticket includes:

  • Personal item: 1 small bag that fits under the seat in front of you (no weight limit, but maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 15 cm)
  • Carry-on baggage: 1 larger piece of carry-on luggage that can be stored in the overhead compartment (maximum 10 kg)

You can add 23 kg of checked baggage for €55.

After completing your initial booking, you can add this via My Travelbase.

Can I use only one leg of my return ticket, and what happens if I miss my outbound flight?

A return ticket is booked as one complete journey and cannot be split into separate one-way flights.

You can take the outbound flight and choose not to use the return flight, but the unused flight cannot be refunded.

Important: If you don’t take the first flight (a no-show), the airline will generally cancel the return flight and any remaining flights on the same ticket. This usually happens automatically and without prior notice.

Can I book a one-way trip?

No, through Travelbase we only offer return flights. If you book a flight through us, it will always be a return flight that matches the trip you booked.

Flight disruptions & assistance

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled?

If your flight is cancelled by the airline, you have several rights as a passenger under EU Regulation 261/2004 (EC 261).

1. Right to care
While waiting for your alternative flight, the airline must provide appropriate care, depending on the waiting time:
- Meals and refreshments
- Hotel accommodation (if an overnight stay is needed)
- Transport (between the airport and hotel)
- Two free phone calls, emails or faxes

2. Right to an alternative flight (option 1) or to a refund (option 2).
You get the choice between either:

Option 1: An Alternative flight (= Rerouting)
An alternative flight to your final destination under comparable conditions, at the earliest opportunity.
! If you choose rerouting, you cannot also claim a refund for the cancelled flight.

Option 2: A Refund
A full refund for the part of the journey you did not take.

Booked own flights
If you decide on the refund of the ticket and you still wish to travel you'll need to book new flights (Verify whether a new roundtrip or a one-way has to be booked).
If you booked your own flights separately from our trip, the trip itself will not be reimbursed.

Booked flights via Travelbase
If you booked flights via Travelbase, either the airline provides a suitable alternative or we arrange a suitable alternative flight. Booking flights via Travelbase gives an extra layer of protection under the law of package travel. A cash refund for the flight will not be offered as we will provide an alternative at no additional cost to you.

3. Right to compensation
Depending on the circumstances, you may also be entitled to financial compensation for the cancellation, separate from your refund or rerouting.

The amount depends mainly on the flight distance and delay and can range from €250 to €600 per passenger.

Important: Compensation is not due for every cancellation. The timing of the cancellation and the reason for it can affect your entitlement.
The compensation claim must be made directly by the passenger. Travelbase cannot submit an EU261 compensation claim on your behalf.

My flight was cancelled. What should I do?

If your flight is cancelled, the first thing you should do is check the options the airline offers and contact us for assistance if needed.
Under passengers rights (EU261) the airline must provide you with two options:

You can choose between an alternative flight (option 1) or to a refund (option 2).
Option 1: An alternative flight (=Rerouting) (you can choose whether to accept it if you find it suitable)

Before accepting an alternative flight, you can check the new arrival time with us to make sure it works with local trip arrangements (e.g shuttle transfers etc). We’ll do our best to accommodate the change if needed, but this cannot always be guaranteed.

Option 2: A refund of your ticket in case you don't accept the alternative or if the airline failed to offer one.

For assistance and advice, you can to contact us.

My luggage is lost or delayed. What should I do?

Unfortunately, this sometimes happens when you travel. Here are the steps we recommend.

Step 1: Report your missing baggage
You can report your missing baggage online through the airline's website or directly at the airport at the lost and found desk or baggage service desk. If possible, report it at the airport. The staff may be able to give you information about the status or location of your baggage.

Step 2: File a baggage claim (Property Irregularity Report)
The airline will ask you to complete a PIR form, the official form for delayed, lost or damaged baggage. Have the following information ready:
Your reservation or booking code (PNR) and/or ticket number (on your e-ticket)
Passenger names
A copy of the baggage tag
A detailed description of your baggage (colour, size, material and distinctive features)

Step 3: Choose a delivery address
Specify where your baggage should be delivered once it has been found, such as your hotel, your next accommodation or your home. Update the address if your plans change. The airline will cover the delivery costs.

Step 4: Request compensation
Most airlines reimburse necessary purchases while you wait for your baggage. Keep all receipts or photos and check with the airline which expenses you can claim.

Step 5: Track your baggage
After submitting your report, you will receive a reference number. Track your baggage through WorldTracer, an international tracking system used at almost 2,000 airports by more than 360 airlines.

Please note that Travelbase has no influence over the recovery or return of lost baggage.

I was denied boarding. What should I do?

If you are denied boarding, first ask the airline for an alternative flight, but do not confirm or accept the alternative immediately.

  • If your flights were booked through us: contact us with the alternative offered by the airline before accepting it. We will check whether the new flight fits your travel itinerary. If the proposed alternative does not work with your trip, we will help you find a suitable solution.
  • If you booked your own flights: ask the airline directly for an alternative flight that allows you to continue your trip as planned. If the new flight affects your travel arrangements with us, please let us know so we can check what can be adjusted on our side.
What are my passenger rights under EU Regulation 261/2004, and when do they apply?

EU Regulation 261/2004 (EU261) protects air passengers in the event of flight delays, cancellations or denied boarding.

Depending on the situation, you may be entitled to care and assistance, a refund or an alternative flight, and/or financial compensation.

When does EU261 apply?

European passenger rights apply when:

  • your flight departs from the EU, regardless of whether it is operated by an EU or non-EU airline
  • your flight arrives in the EU from outside the EU and is operated by an EU airline
  • your flight takes place within the EU, regardless of whether it is operated by an EU or non-EU airline

EU261 generally does not apply to a flight from outside the EU to the EU operated by a non-EU airline.

What should I do if I’m at risk of missing my flight?

If you know or think you’re going to miss your flight, contact the airline and Travelbase as soon as possible.

Contact us and use the following subject line:

URGENT - MISSED FLIGHT - [COUNTRY NAME] - [RESERVATION CODE]

The airline may be able to rebook your flight, but we can’t guarantee this. If you need to book a new flight, any additional costs will be at your own expense.

If possible, contact us before booking an alternative flight. This allows us to check whether your new arrival time fits in with the trip itinerary.

Important: If you miss your outbound flight, the airline may automatically cancel the remaining flights in your booking.

Can Travelbase file a compensation claim on my behalf?

No, passengers must request compensation for issues such as long delays, cancellations, denied boarding or baggage problems directly from the airline.

Travelbase cannot submit this claim on your behalf, but we're happy to help if you have any questions about the process.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed, and can I claim compensation?

If the European passenger rights rules (EU261) apply, your rights depend on the length of the delay and the distance of your flight.

Assistance while you wait
If your departure is delayed, the airline must provide food and drinks after:

  • 2 hours of delay for flights of up to 1,500 km;
  • 3 hours of delay for flights within the EU of more than 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km;
  • 4 hours of delay for all other flights.

If you can only leave the next day, you are also entitled to a hotel stay and transport between the airport and the hotel. If the airline does not provide assistance and you have to cover necessary and reasonable expenses yourself, always keep your receipts.

5 hours or more of delay at departure
If your departure is delayed by at least 5 hours, you can choose not to travel and request a refund of your ticket. For connecting journeys, you may also be entitled to a return flight to your original departure point if necessary.

Financial compensation
If you arrive at your final destination 3 hours or more late, you may be entitled to financial compensation. The amount depends on the flight distance and can be up to €600 per person. You are not entitled to this compensation if the airline can show that the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided.

You must submit a compensation claim directly to the airline that operated the flight.

Preparation

My ID card/passport expires soon. Can I still travel?

You can find the required travel documents in the general preparation information for your trip.

Before your flight, check that your ID card or passport is valid and that your personal details match those on your flight booking.

As entry requirements can change and depend on your nationality, we recommend checking the latest official requirements before departure:

What should I bring?

You'll receive a packing list well in advance, with an overview of all the equipment you'll need.

The basic requirements are:

  • Hiking boots, at least category A/B, that properly protect your ankles
  • A backpack or duffel bag (approximately 65–80 L) and a daypack (30–35 L)
  • A technical rain jacket and rain trousers: be prepared for changing weather conditions. Rainwear with a waterproof rating of at least 15,000 mm is essential, and don't forget to pack warm clothes. Evenings can get quite chilly.
  • Good-quality camping gear: if you're bringing your own equipment, make sure you have a tent (at least three-season), a sleeping mat (minimum R-value of 3) and a sleeping bag (minimum comfort temperature of 2°C).

You can also rent camping equipment and hiking poles from us.

What kind of footwear is required for the hike?

High-top hiking boots are mandatory. Low-cut hiking shoes, trail running shoes, sneakers, and other low-cut footwear are not permitted. The terrain is often rocky, uneven, and challenging. High-top hiking boots provide the necessary ankle support and help reduce the risk of injury.

Can I get to know the other participants beforehand?

Yes, two weeks before departure, you can meet your fellow travelers through the official group chat in the Travelbase app. Due to privacy regulations, we don't share personal contact details, but you're of course free to exchange contact information during the trail.
